Monifieth
golf links is situated to the East of the city of discovery,
Dundee. An area steeped in golfing history. Monifieth is the
most westerly of the great triumuirate of links courses of
which Panmure Barry occupies the middle, with the mighty Carnoustie
only four miles to the East.
There are two courses at Monifieth with 'The Medal Course'
being the principle, having staged the Open Championship qualifying
in the year that Tom Watson won his first open title at Carnoustie
in 1975.
Monifieth can also lay claim to having staged both the Scottish
Amateur Stroke-Play and Match-Play Championships.
The
second course is 'The Ashludie', with a par 68 this is a popular
course with youngster's, ladies, and those who seek a little
respite from the rigors of 'The Medal' layout. Like its near
neighbours, the Medal Course, is a links in the traditional
vein, there are no airs or graces here, when the prevailing
wind whistles in over the Firth of Tay you can be sure that
Monifieth takes 'No Prisoners'.
Golf has been played on these Dunes, between the strands of
whin and gorse, since the early 1600's, but the first signs
of a real course date from around 1850. Par is a strict 71
and there are a large number of memorable, and wonderful,
holes scattered along its 6650 yards.
With large, fast, and true greens, together with some clever
bunking this is surely one of the most underrated links to
be found anywhere in Scotland.
