Gullane
No 1 is the principle of three courses at Gullane golf club.
It is known that golf has been played in these parts for more
than 300 years, until 1850 there were only seven holes, but
with the arrival of the Gutta Percha Ball, golf became more
accessible and the game began to expand. To accommodate the
growing number of players Gullane golf club was founded in
1882, and was increased to 18 holes. By the end of the nineteenth
century a second course was built, a third being added in
1910 to satisfy golf's growing popularity.
Golf
here is much hillier than at other links courses because of
Gullane Hill, but the amount of climbing is less than a visitor
may think at first glance. The climb is no great hardship,
and the views all around are quite spectacular, east lies
Muirfield, to the west lies the city of Edinburgh, and straight
north the Firth of Forth.
All three Gullane courses share the same wonderful turf coupled
with superb putting surfaces. Venue to many important Championships
in it long history stretching back to 1897 when Gullane organized
and hosted the British Ladies Championship. A regular final
qualifying course for the Open, and a popular venue for British
Boys and Youths Championship, Gullane has also played host
to the Scottish Amateur Championship both Men & Ladies.
One of the historic centres of world golf Gullane boasts wonderful
and imaginative names to identify individual holes, Maggies
Loup, Queen's Head, King's Chair, Corbie, and Traprain are
only a few, all of whom can be found when playing Gullane
No 1 course.
The first Tee of the No 1 course can be found amidst the Professional
Shop, a twelfth century church, and a famous golf museum.
From the first you follow the climb up Gullane Hill until
you reach the seventh tee, Bernard Darwin once described this
vantage point as the best view in golf, a feeling to be savored
again at the seventeenth where the wide expanse of East Lothian
is laid out for all to see.
