Beautifully
sculpted holes, natural features, and a stunning parkland
setting, The Dukes Course is the perfect complement to St
Andrews Links Courses. Owned by the Old Course Hotel Resort
& Spa the Dukes Course occupies an elevated site enjoying
specacular views over the town and bay of St Andrews.
Peter
Thomson was commissioned by the Old Course Hotel to design
this new layout, having a house in the area Thomson was
a natural choice. Possessing a deep affinity and understanding
of British Golf, the site for the Dukes Course was a real
challange to Peter's philosophy that the game of Golf is
played on the ground and not in the air.
The course is a solid testament to this philosophy, approaches
to greens are left open to encourage the 'Pitch and Run'
while the greens are contoured and devilishly quick. Played
to its full length, the Dukes is the longest inland course
in Scotland, though only the stoutest of hearts will want
to play its full 7271 yards.
It is said that the ghost of the infamous Archbishop James
Sharp, in his phantom carriage, has been known to thunder
past the clubhouse before plunging into the bay of St Andrews.
The tale surrounding James Sharp is a gruesome one of the
seventeenth century, todays hospitality extended to visitors
is much warmer with the magnificient new clubhouse set in
a secluded copse close to poor Archbishop Sharps demise.
The clubhouse itself is a Five-Star facility, including
a relaxing lounge with excellent food available in the dining
room. The Duke's course stands as a tribute to Peter Thomson's
philosophy of golf, in a very traditional vein.
