The
Blairgowrie Golf Club was formed following a meeting held in
the Victoria Hotel, Blairgowrie on Tuesday, 26th February 1889.
The Chairman of the meeting said a suitable piece of ground
for golf had been found close to the Black Loch belonging to
the Dowager Marchioness of Lansdowne, from whom the course took
its name, Lansdowne, later to be called "The Wee Course".
Old Tom Morris played the first match on the 9 hole course with
the Captain, Sir Alexander Mackenzie of Delvine, as his partner,
against the Secretary , Mr Henry-Anderson and Major Peter Chalmers.
The match was very close, with Tom Morris sinking a long putt
on the last green to win. When leaving, Tom Morris said, "I
think this is the most beautiful inland green I have ever seen"
- a very favourable comment from the most famous of golfers
who had laid out courses in all parts of Scotland and Ireland.
There
are now a further two 18-hole courses at Blairgowrie, the older
and more celebrated Rosemount, designed by James Braid, and
the Lansdowne Course, a 1970's addition, the work of Peter Alliss
and Dave Thomas. On each, golf is played over beautiful heathland
fairways, lined by forests of pine and silver birch. A liberal
sprinkling of purple heather, broom and gorse add considerable
colour to an already majestic setting.
In September 1995 the Senior Ladies British Open Amateur
Championship was played over the Rosemount Course. Mrs Angela
Uzielli and Mrs Diane Williams from Canada tied on 152, Angela
won the play off at the first hole beating defending champion
Diane. The Seniors Open Amateur Championship was played over
the Rosemount and Lansdowne courses in 1996. The Championship
was won by Joel S Hirsch from America.
The Rosemount Course measures around 6,600 yards with a course
record of 64, though in 1973, during a practice round for the
Sumrie Better Ball Tournament, Professional Lionel Platts achieved
a world record ten consecutive birdies between the 8th and 17th.
In 1977 Greg Norman won his first European tour event, the Martini,
over the Rosemount Course. The Lansdowne Course is slightly
longer than its older brother, and, many would say, a much sterner
test. The Scottish Golf Union have played the Mid-Amateur Championship
over this course twice in the last three years.
Golfers wishing to sample the delights of the course are made
to feel welcome at Blairgowrie although there are restrictions
on Wednesdays, Fridays, and at weekends. |
