James
Braid is credited with the layout of Belleisle Golf Course back
in 1927. Braid is responsible for almost 200 course layouts
and refurbishments throughout the British Isles, what he produced
on the Belleisle estate is regarded by many as the finest inland
public course in Britain. Braid wove his magic, combining the
natural features of the landscape into holes of genuine character.
Many who travel to the Ayrshire coast tend to overlook Belleisle
in favour of its more illustrious neighbours of Preswick, Troon,
and Turnberry. Belleisle is one west coast course not to be
missed found in a beautiful natural setting it proves that it
does not have to be in private hands to rank among the best.
Although, not far from the sea, Belleisle is a parkland layout
with mature trees lining many of its fairways which are normally
lush and green.
A
look at the score card tells just how demanding it really is,
at 6477 yards there are only two Par 4's under 400 yards.
The Course opens with two Par 5's, and finishes with another.
With four Par 3's, the 3rd being uphill and playing considerably
longer than its 176 yards being, guarded by bunkers both left
and right. The stream across the fairway on the 16th hole, has
proved a watery grave for many a promising score, and is one
of a trio of difficult finishing holes which include the tricky
17th and the long Par 5 18th, 'Brown Carrick' a slight dogleg
to the right of 532 yards. |
